Preview: Phillies look for a series win, premiere pitching matchup set for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball
The Phillies and Cardinals square off on ESPN tonight at 7:00 EST with the series on the line. Zack Wheeler (6-4, 2.89 ERA) takes the hill for the Phils, going up against veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright (6-5, 3.07 ERA).
Saturday afternoon’s game was a tough one that got off to the worst start possible. Kyle Gibson let up not one, not two, not three, but FOUR homers in a row in the top of the 1st, giving the Cardinals an early 5-0 lead.
The Phillies did however make this game interesting, as they strung together two runs in the second, followed by three runs in the third to tie the game up at 5. Both teams traded runs in the 5th and 6th innings, but a 9th inning Nolan Arenado blast off Seranthony Dominguez would eventually seal the game 7-6, pushing the series to 1-1.
Tonight’s game takes the stage on ESPN, with fireworks to follow the end of the game. It’s going to be a beautiful night at Citizens Bank Park, with one of the best pitching matchups we’ve seen all season taking the headline. A win tonight puts the Phillies just 1.5 games back of the Cardinals for the last Wild Card spot, which would be a massive plus for the Fightins. The Phillies have three lined up with the Nationals following this series while the Cards have four against the Braves starting on Monday.
