Phillies Report: Nationals attempted to acquire top prospect in a 3-team deal for Juan Soto

The Nationals traded a generational talent in Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres back on August 2nd, but according to Kiley McDaniel of ESPN, the Phillies and Andrew Painter were almost involved in the deal.
Andrew Painter is the top prospect in the whole Phillies organization and was just promoted to Double-A Reading along with RHP Mick Abel. Painter has dominated Low and High A in 2022, tallying just a 1.19 ERA in 17 starts. He’s totaled 75.1 innings, allowing just 42 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out a whopping 118 batters.
McDaniel ranked Painter as his 32nd best prospect in all of baseball and said this in his article…
“Painter (great pitcher name) has had a huge velo spike this spring, gaining 3-4 ticks (he’s now hitting triple digits) and firming up his already 55-to-60 grade raw stuff to be even better. He’s the consensus best pitching prospect in baseball below AA (now in AA)…chatter around the league is that he was one of the players the Nationals were trying to initiate side deals or three-way trades to include Juan Soto in trade proposals.
The Phillies were in need of a starting pitcher at the trade deadline, and before they acquired Noah Syndergaard right at the buzzer, rumors were pointing to the team going after Giants SP Carlos Rodon. The price seemed high, but looking now at McDaniel’s report, it seemed like any deal with Rodon would’ve been a 3-teamer that went something like this…
- Phillies get: Carlos Rodon
- Nationals get: Andrew Painter, Giants prospects
- Giants get: Juan Soto

Thank god the Phillies didn’t do this deal. Dave Dombrowski has made it very well-known that he isn’t interested in breaking up this young core of Painter/Abel/McGarry, especially for rental arms. Noah Syndergaard has done his job in his time here so far, and Ranger Suarez and Kyle Gibson have stepped up multiple levels since the August 2nd deadline.
The Phillies have assembled one of the best 1-2-3 combos in Double-A history, and they’ll all be in the majors before we know it.
