Series Preview: Phillies and Mets meet again, square off in 4-game weekend series at CBP

The Philadelphia Phillies welcome the division-rival New York Mets to town for a 4-game weekend series. Aaron Nola (8-9, 3.07 ERA) gets the ball for the Phils, going up against Chris Bassitt (10-7, 3.27 ERA).
With just over 40 games left in the regular season, we’ve officially entered crunch time. The Phillies sit at 65-52 on the season and currently hold a 1-game lead on the San Diego Padres for the second NL Wild Card spot.
The Mets still hold the NL East, but the Braves are right in the rear-view mirror, sitting just 3.5 games back after once being at 10 earlier in the season. The Mets are 76-43 on the year, holding the 2nd best record in the National League, just behind the 81-36 Dodgers.
Last weekend’s Phillies vs. Mets series was a great series although the Phillies dropped two of three. The Phillies will avoid Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer this weekend, as they are set to pitch Monday and Tuesday for the Mets against the Yankees.
Aaron Nola gets the ball for the Phillies tonight, coming off a gusty, elite performance against New York on Saturday. Nola threw eight innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out 8. Unfortunately, the Phillies couldn’t hit a baseball that night, as Jacob deGrom fanned 10 in six shutout innings, powering the Phillies to just three total hits on the night.
Nola has been remarkable this season, tallying just a 3.07 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP in 152.2 innings, allowing 121 hits while striking out 165. He’ll face off against Chris Bassitt, who dominated the Phils for five innings on Sunday, allowing just four hits and zero earned runs in the Mets’ 6-0 win.

Phillies Injury Update: The Good and The Bad
Injuries have hit the Phillies recently, as Brandon Marsh has hit the IL after leaping for a ball in centerfield vs. Cincinnati. The team did claim Bradley Zimmer off of waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays as an attempt to temporarily fill Marsh’s hole in centerfield. Matt Vierling will still get reps, but the team still needs him in the outfield til Kyle Schwarber comes back.
Bryce Harper was transferred to the 60-Day IL and is now eligible to return to the team on Thursday, August 25th. The team will be getting their star player back soon and will insert him into a lineup that has been raking when clicked together.

Prediction
There is absolutely no reason the Phillies shouldn’t take 3 of 4 from the Mets this weekend. deGrom and Scherzer aren’t throwing and you’re at home. Win a damn series.
