Roster Moves: Phillies expand roster to 28 players, add catching and bullpen depth

The Phillies have expanded their roster to 28 players, calling up C Donny Sands and selecting the contract of RHP Vinny Nittoli from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Vinny Nittoli has been called up to the major league team after the Phillies acquired him on Wednesday. Nittoli, 31, has thrown a great season in AAA for the Blue Jays and Yankees, tallying a total ERA of 3.30 in 46.1 innings. He’s tallied a 0.993 WHIP and a 9.0 SO9 this season and has allowed just 17 earned runs and 32 hits.

Donny Sands will make his way to the majors for the first time in his career after a fantastic season in AAA. Sands slashed .309/.413/.428 in 57 games with 62 hits, 6 HRs, 36 RBIs, and an OPS of .841.
Carrying three catchers seems a little odd, but it never hurts to get JT Realmuto off of his feet. Expect Sands to maybe be sent down in a few days once Yairo Munoz is eligible to come back up to the majors.
Up Next for the Phillies
The Phillies are off today but take the field tomorrow night on AppleTV+, as they open up a 3-game set against Gabe Kapler and the San Francisco Giants.
