Phillies Injury Updates: Rob Thomson on Zach Eflin, Zack Wheeler, and Seranthony Dominguez

Tuesday was a step in the right direction for injured Phillies pitchers Zack Wheeler, Zach Eflin, and Seranthony Dominguez.
Zach Eflin
Phillies RHP Zach Eflin is slowly climbing his way back to the major league roster after dealing with a knee injury since the end of June. Eflin threw 26 pitches in two innings on the mound prior to tonight’s matchup with the Miami Marlins.
Thomson said Eflin’s fastball was moving well, sitting around 93-95 mph. A rehab assignment is soon to come for Eflin, and it seems he will be returning as a reliever. With under a month to go in the Phillies season, there’s no time to build Eflin back up to a true starter.
Zach Eflin had a 3-5 record with a 4.37 ERA before he hit the IL. Eflin is ready to get back and said: “I want to pitch in the playoffs.”
Seranthony Dominguez
Rob Thomson said Seranthony’s innings today were “really good”. Dominguez hit the 15-day IL back on August 21st with right tricep tendinitis, but seems to be inching closer and closer to a rehab assignment as well.
Seranthony Dominguez threw one simulated inning today, where his fastball sat around 95-96 mph. Getting Dominguez back into the closer spot will be huge for the bullpen, as he posted just a 1.64 ERA in 46 games in 2022 before going down.

Zack Wheeler
Phillies ace Zack Wheeler played catch today while Seranthony and Eflin were on the mound and didn’t feel an ounce of soreness during that time.
The Phillies are moving forward with a throwing program for Wheeler, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. Gelb also said that Wheeler is expected to have one more flat-ground catch before taking the mound. A rehab assignment will most certainly come for Wheeler in the near future as well. Rob Thomson said Wheeler “could be a week or more away.”
Getting their ace back will be game-changing for the Phillies’ starting rotation, as Wheeler held an 11-7 record with a 3.07 ERA and 148 Ks before hitting the IL.
