Injury News: Eagles DE Derek Barnett is out for the year after tearing his ACL on Sunday

The Eagles managed to avoid the injury bug all throughout training camp, but it appears it’s caught up to them just one week into the season.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, an MRI revealed that backup defensive end Derek Barnett tore his ACL on Sunday against the Lions.
The former first-round pick signed a two-year extension with the Eagles this offseason that guaranteed Barnett $4.5 million. That number could have been boosted to $5.5M had the defensive end played every game this season, but he obviously won’t be able to reach that incentive now.
Barnett didn’t see much action in Week 1, logging just 12 defensive snaps on the day (17 percent of the total snaps). Nevertheless, the Eagles have always prioritized defensive line depth and Barnett figured to play a pivotal role as a rotational defensive end this season.
Second-year pass rusher Tarron Jackson — who didn’t see a single snap against Detroit — will now have to step up as a rotational piece for Jonathan Gannon’s defensive line.
Barnett will likely head to season-ending injured reserve, which will open up a roster spot. Expect Howie Roseman to scour the defensive end market or look to his practice squad for defensive end reinforcements.
