Roster Moves: Phillies reinstate Zack Wheeler from IL, send right-handed reliever to AAA

The Philadelphia Phillies have reinstated RHP Zack Wheeler from the 15-day IL.

As a corresponding move, the team has optioned RHP Sam Coonrod, who has thrown just 12 games since returning from the IL to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

The Phillies get their ace back tonight, as Zack Wheeler returns after being placed on the IL back on August 28th with right forearm tendinitis. Wheeler has thrown 138 innings in 2022, tallying an 11-7 record with a 3.07 ERA. He’s allowed 47 earned runs and 116 hits while striking out 148, with a WHIP of 1.080.

Sam Coonrod is optioned to Lehigh Valley, as he’s struggled since returning from the 60-day IL. In 12 games, Coonrod has recorded a 7.82 ERA, allowing 12 hits and 11 earned runs. He’s walked 7 while striking out just 12 and has thrown a 1.500 WHIP.

Coonrod was a great pickup from San Francisco prior to last season but was never the same once he got hurt. He returned this season and could never find his footing, and it seems like he’ll finish his 2022 bout in Triple-A.

Up Next for the Phillies

The Phillies desperately need a win tonight, even though last night’s game technically didn’t matter in the standings. Wheeler takes the hill, going up against Kevin Gausman for Toronto. Check out our full preview here.
