A Colombian soccer game was cancelled after 1,400 Deportivo Cali fans invaded the pitch to ATTACK their own players and coaching staff

Over 1,400 Colombian soccer fans invaded the field to attack their own team after Deportivo Cali was losing 2-0 to Cortuluá.
Deportivo Cali Attack Their Own Team
After reading about this, it looks like Deportivo Cali is sitting in last place of the Colombia’s Categoria Primera A table. After falling behind 2-0 to the home team Cortuluá, fans decided they had seen enough of their miserable soccer team and decided to rush the field in the 81st minute.
The majority of players tucked their tails between their legs and ran off the field with the officiating crew, but some were left in the crossfire.
Deportivo Cali striker Teofilo Gutierrez struggled to get away as a group of furious supporters punched and kicked him.
Manager Mayer Candelo was also injured during the attacks.
Deportivo Cali have since released an official statement to request that the local authorities intervene to prevent a similar incident from happening again in future.
It read: “The Cali Sports Association, Executive Committee, President Luis Fernando Mena, Professional Staff, Officials and employees emphatically reject the aggression, harassment and violence suffered by our team during the match against Cortulua.
Holy shit. That seems absolutely terrifying.
Could you imagine being a member of that soccer team, already having to go out and play soccer while your team is the worst in the league and then to top it off, you have your own fans trying to beat the crap out of you?
I will say, I do appreciate the fans of Deportivo Cali for a few reasons.
One, this was an away game and these fans traveled to see their soccer team, who again, is the worst in the entire league, lose on the road. That’s heart and dedication. Period. If they didn’t bum rush the field like a group of rabid animals, this headline would have been written much differently.
“Dedication: Deportivo Cali Fans Travel to Watch Their Team Play Soccer, Even Though Cali Is A Dumpster Fire”
Playing soccer in other countries is terrifying. We’ve heard story after story about how bad things can get in South America during soccer matches. Overall, it just doesn’t seem like the smart move to attack your own fanbase. How does the team come back from this? Surely no one will ever want to play there again knowing that if you are performing bad, your fans will literally try to beat the shit out of you.
It’s an ugly look for sure, and instead of condemning the acts, Deportivo Cali should have went on the offensive and blamed Cortuluá for implementing “crisis actors” at their own stadium to make the team look bad. This is also why I don’t like the 2022 World Cup being played in Qatar, a country where you cant do ANYTHING fun. Seems like another recipe for disaster.
