Opinion: Eli Manning, Jimmer Fredette, and the undercover athlete trend at colleges is already annoying and has officially jumped the shark

In a single week, we now have two “undercover athlete” videos that have popped up on social media and I’m already completely annoyed by them. First, you had Eli Manning showing up as Chad Powers to Penn State, then you had Jimmer Fredette heading to BYU as Tim Schloss.
I’m sorry. Maybe I’m just being an asshole and an overly harsh critic, but neither of these videos are even funny to begin with. When Eli Manning’s video dropped on Twitter, I even thought about getting a post up, but then was so unsatisfied with the content I just ignored it. Now that we have another video with Jimmer Fredette doing the exact same bit, I could no longer remain silent.

Okay I think we have seen enough of these “undercover” videos with professional athletes heading to colleges and attending open tryouts. Honestly, I can’t even tell who’s in on the “joke” in either video to begin with and who is just an idiot who has no idea that obviously both of these people are doing some type of prank.
Why are both dressed like they are from the 70s and how on earth does no one realize who these guys are? Anyone with half of a brain realizes it was Eli Manning and BYU legend Jimmer Fredette.
Can’t we ever just get one video and let that one play out without immediately making another version of it? I have never seen something “jump the shark” so quickly in my entire life.
I don’t see this trend ever getting better and think there needs to be a collective effort to prevent these types of unfunny, boring, unoriginal videos from continuing to happen.
Unfortunately, I don’t think they will stop and this probably only the beginning.
Thanks to the always dorky Penn State students, who think it was the best thing ever and are buying a ridiculous amount of t-shirts.
Just kill me.
At least Jimmer Fredette went to BYU and then returned to his alma matter. For everyone at BYU, you should probably know the only successful basketball player that has played at your school, regardless of a wig and some makeup.
As for Eli Manning, he didn’t even go to Penn State. I literally don’t see the appeal of a quarterback from another school going undercover and it actually being a successful hit.
Make it stop.
