NHL Preseason Preview: Flyers and Bruins face off in Game No. 1

John Tortorella will get his first view of his new team but from a different spot than where most Flyers fans are used to seeing him.
Tortorella announced in his media availability yesterday that the Laperriere will coach the first two preseason games. His assistants will get the next two games, and then finally, he’ll be behind the bench for the final game.
Tortorella will be watching from above to watch other parts of the game that are harder to catch from behind the bench.
In addition to watching the next handful of games from above to gain a different perspective, he’s also delegating the game rosters and where those players will play in the lineup to the scouts and upper management. So this is all Fletcher, Flahr, and scouts determining who gets these first looks.
The game will be on at 7:00 PM on NBCSP+.
The Flyers announced the game roster yesterday around 9 PM and it features young talent such as Morgan Frost, Owen Tippett & Cam York.
Felix Sandstrom, who started five games for the Flyers last season, will get the start in goal tonight. Sandstrom had a 3.23 GAA and .910 SV% in those five games last year.
Per Laperriere, Troy Grosenick will split the game with Felix. Grosenick has played four total games in the NHL and has spent the majority of his career in the AHL. In his most recent AHL stint, Grosenick put up a 2.00 GAA and a .933 SV% with the Providence Bruins.
In the morning skate today, we learned about the starting forward combination and defensive pairs.
Morgan Frost and Owen Tippett are two young players looking to prove that they can be difference makers in the NHL. Olle Lycksell has spent the last few years in the SHL but has impressed in the limited time training camp has been running.
That’ll be an interesting line to watch out for tonight.
Roussel, a PTO invite with a ton of NHL experience, is getting a nice opportunity with Tanner Laczynski and Wade Allison. Artemi Anisimov is another PTO that will be in tonight’s game. He’ll play between Max Willman and Hayden Hodgson.
The Power-Play units were also announced, and it looks like (my guess on actual spots) the first unit will be:
Unit 1
- Wall: Morgan Frost
- Wall: Owen Tippett
- Slot: Tyson Foerster
- Netfront: Noah Cates
- Point: Cam York
Unit 2:
- Wall: Wade Allison
- Wall: Olle Lycksell
- Slot: Tanner Laczynski
- Netfront: Artem Anisimov
- Point: Ronnie Attard
