Both the Marlins and Royals are going through transitions in their organizations, and it was time for a new voice in the clubhouse. Don Mattingly was informed his contract wouldn’t be renewed a week before the regular season ended, while KC let Mike Matheny go once the season concluded.
Dusty has been the third base coach for the Phillies for five seasons and was a manager for multiple Phillies minor-league teams for close to 10 years. Wathan did play for the Royals in his 14-year pro baseball career and grew up in the KC area.
Dusty Wathan has grown a special relationship with the players, especially ones in the past like Andrew McCutchen and Didi Gregorius. He’s a guy that people seem to love, and although it would be a tough loss at third base, Wathan would be a great manager. If he goes to one of these two teams, hopefully, it’s the Royals.
