Ranger Suarez wins Fielding Bible’s “Best Defensive Pitcher” award

Phillies LHP Ranger Suarez has won the 2022 Best Defensive Pitcher award from Fielding Bible.
Suarez led the entire MLB in defensive runs saved as a pitcher with 8, while Taijuan Walker of the New York Mets was behind him with just 6. Ranger had a great season on the mound for the Phillies, going 10-7 with a 3.65 ERA in 29 starts. Suarez has always been a ground-ball-first pitcher, and with that comes a heavy responsibility to field your position.
Probably the most impressive stat of them all, Suarez didn’t allow a single stolen base in 155.1 innings this season. It’s already hard to steal on a left-handed pitcher, and once you pair that with JT Realmuto’s pop time and arm strength, it sets up for a pretty deadly duo. Suarez would have won the National League Gold Glove at the pitcher position but was three innings shy of the minimum required.

Ranger Suarez has been an integral part of the Phillies rotation and a key piece in the playoffs, as he’s started and even closed out games. Suarez’s defense was on full display on Sunday night after making a beautiful play and throw to first on a Trent Grisham bunt in the Top of the 9th inning.

Trophies like this are cool, but the quest for the big one starts in less than 24 hours, as the Phillies and Astros kick off Game 1 of the World Series at 8:03 EST on Friday. Aaron Nola will take on Justin Verlander.
