Phillies and Sam Coonrod agree on cheap deal for 2023

The Phillies and Sam Coonrod have agreed on a 1-year deal worth $775k, according to Mark Fiensand of MLB.com.

Sam Coonrod Signs 1-Year, $775k Deal with Phillies for 2023

Sam Coonrod was acquired back in January 2021 and made 42 appearances for the Phillies that season. He tallied a 4.04 ERA out of the pen for a struggling unit but gave the Phillies some valuable innings in a rough time, striking out 48 batters in 42 innings.

Coonrod was shut down at the end of the ’21 season with right forearm tendinitis, which then lead to a right shoulder strain that kept him out for most of the 2022 season. He struggled when he came back, tallying a 7.82 ERA in just 12.2 innings.

Any deal for less than a million dollars is a good deal, and if Sam Coonrod can get back to his old self, he’ll be a useful piece for a Phillies bullpen that has a lot of decisions to be made this offseason.
