DeVonta Smith can make Eagles history in Week 18

DeVonta Smith has had a hell of a season for the Eagles in 2022-23. The second-year receiver and Heisman winner locked up the franchise record for rookie receiving yards last season. One record isn’t enough for Smitty, though, and he has his sights set on another Eagles record – one that nobody has come close to since 2015.
DeVonta Smith can set the franchise record for receptions with just one (1) catch against the Giants:
That’s right, DeVonta Smith has a chance to claim sole possession of the single-season receptions record. He’s currently tied with franchise legend Irving Fryar at 88.
Smitty may have had one more game to break the record but I do not want to hear it. Shoddy gameplanning for Week 1 left him with zero catches, and he’s still managed to put up these numbers. I know it’s not the same, but I frankly don’t care.
Of course, you can also see AJ Brown listed with 84 catches. The two receivers already made franchise history when they become the first tandem to put up 1,000+ yards each.
Technically, both AJ and Smitty have the ability to break the record on Sunday. All it would take to have both get to 89 is six total catches (1 for DeVonta, 5 for Brown).
If one or both receivers break that record, it will be yet another accomplishment for the two studs. Eagles fans have never seen a WR duo this good, I don’t care who you are.
I’m as big a Harold Carmichael or DeSean Jackson guy as the next guy. Even so, if things continue in this direction, we may be looking at the two best wideouts in franchise history (at least since the merger).
Clearly I’ve gotten ahead of myself. But, while I’ve got one eye on the future, DeVonta Smith has both eyes on the ball.
