Chris Sale has thrown just 11 games over the last two years and missed the entire 2020 season. Sale was out with Tommy John during the COVID season, then returned just to break his finger, followed by a freak bike accident that sidelined him with a fractured right wrist.
The injury bug has obviously hit Sale, and his contract is heavy, but his resume speaks for itself.

Sale’s best season of his career came in 2017 with the Boston Red Sox, where he logged a 2.90 ERA in 214.1 innings with a whopping 308 strikeouts, compared to just 45 walks and an ERA+ of 121. He posted an average ERA+ of 162 before the injuries hit him and has solidified himself as one of the most dominant arms in baseball.

Chris Sale is owed $27.5M the next two seasons, along with $20M in 2025, so if the Phillies did acquire Sale, it would have to be for trade. It seems very unlikely that the Phillies would make this move, given the assets and prospects it would take, but never rule out Dave Dombrowski when it comes to trading for former Red Sox players.
