Members of 2020 NFL draft class, including Jalen Hurts, are now eligible for extensions

As the saying goes, yesterday’s price is not today’s price.
That is certainly the case with Jalen Hurts, whose meteoric rise in 2023 will undoubtedly place him amongst the highest-paid QBs next season.
With the regular season concluding, members of the 2020 NFL draft class, including second-round pick Jalen Hurts, are now eligible for contract extensions.

Hurts is currently playing out the third year of his four-year rookie contract, and since he was a second-round pick, the Eagles don’t have the luxury of a fifth-year option that you would get with first-round players. Philadelphia could always stick him with the franchise tag in 2024 (worth around $54.4M), but I doubt the organization would welcome unnecessary drama.
Per Spotrac, the framework for a new Hurts contract is projected to be around $45.6M annually; a number that would put him between Josh Allen and Kyler Murray in terms of AAV. His agent won’t be short of ammo in negotiations; Hurts has won several awards this season in addition to leading Philadelphia to 14 wins, a new franchise record.
The Eagles have a history of rewarding their quarterbacks early, for better or worse.
- 2002: Donovan McNabb — 9-year, $70M extension
- 2011: Michael Vick — 5-year, $80M extension
- 2016: Sam Bradford — 2-year, $36M extension
- 2019: Carson Wentz — 4-year, $128M extension
If Hurts brings the city its second Super Bowl title, GM Howie Roseman will likely hand him a blank check.
