Preview: 0-3 Phillies travel to Yankee Stadium, TLL crew heads up with Phans of Philly
The Philadelphia Phillies kick off a 3-game series with the New York Yankees tonight, looking for their first win of the 2023 season after a tough 0-3 start.
It hasn’t been an ideal start for the Phillies. Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler combined for eight innings and nine earned runs in their season debuts, while the Phillies offense went silent on Sunday Night Baseball after a smooth 5 1/3 from Bailey Falter.
The Texas Rangers combined for 27 runs in the first two games, thanks to abysmal pitching performances from many arms on the Phillies. There’s no reason to be worried yet, considering baseball doesn’t truly start until June 1st, but this definitely wasn’t the ideal start for the Phillies.
The team now heads to famous Yankee Stadium for a 3-game slate against Aaron Judge and the Yankees, who got off to a 2-1 start against the San Francisco Giants on Opening Weekend. Taijuan Walker vs. Nestor Cortes
Taijuan Walker makes his Phillies regular season debut tonight, looking to earn the Phillies their first win of the season. Walker will normally be the third starter in the rotation, but with the Yankees’ righty-heavy lineup, Rob Thomson preferred Walker to start over Falter.
Walker is coming off a 12-5 season with the Mets, logging a 3.49 ERA in 29 total starts. He logged a .706 winning percentage last season while posting a 2.6 WAR and striking out 132 batters in 157 innings.
Nestor Cortes makes his 2023 debut and is coming off a great season with the Yankees, logging a 12-4 record with 163 Ks in 158 innings and a 0.92 WHIP. Cortes is entering his sixth season in the leagues and his fourth with the Yankees.
