Phillies blown out in the Bronx 8-1, Phans of Philly trip to New York recap

Fresh off getting swept by the Texas Rangers in the opening series of 2023, the Philadelphia Phillies traveled across the country to the Bronx to face the Yankees last night, suffering yet another brutal loss.
Phans of Philly – Phillies Trip to the Bronx
The Liberty Line joined Phans of Philly and headed up to the Bronx to watch the game. Phans of Philly chartered seven buses packed Phillies fans, Marinucci’s hoagies, Philly soft pretzels, chips, Miller Lite, and bottled water from the Eagles’ NovaCare Complex to head up to New York for last night’s game.
While the game itself was a huge dud, I promise you, there’s really nothing quite like Phans of Philly and what Joe and his team are able to do for Philadelphia sports fans.
It really is the definition of worry-free traveling.
Phans of Philly takes care of every little detail, making sure anyone who travels with them is completely taken care of from start to finish. Last October, we were down in Arizona for the Eagles-Cardinals game and also caught the Phillies’ Wild Card series, which coincidentally was also against the Cardinals.
We entered yesterday a perfect 3-0 on trips with Phans of Philly but unfortunately, Taijuan Walker, in his Phillies’ debut couldn’t get the win and Philadelphia was handed an 8-1 loss to the Yankees.
Walker lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, four earned runs, and three walks while striking out five. He was pulled after 87 pitches with one out in the fifth inning, relieved by Yunior Marie who got smacked all around Yankee Stadium.
Marte has now appeared in two games for The Phillies this season. Against Texas, he lasted 0.2 innings and allowed two hits, two earned runs, and a walk. Last night, he lasted just 0.1 innings, allowing three hits, four earned runs, and a home run.
Needless to say, Marte won’t be around at the major league level much longer.
That was pretty much it for the Philadelphia Phillies last night. Walker and Marte allowed eight runs over the first five innings and the offense couldn’t recover. Andrew Vasquez and Seranthony Dominguez combined to throw 3.1 innings, walking three and striking out one, while giving up zero runs.
At the plate, Trea Turner was 2-for-5, Realmuto was 1-for-4, Bohm at DH went 3-for-4, while Stott and Sosa both picked up a hit each. Brandon Marsh was 2-for-4 on the night while Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos were held hitless.
The Phillies are now the only team in Major League Baseball without a win this season. They have allowed 37 runs while scoring just 12 (seven on Opening Day) and have been out-homered 8-1 over the first four games.
While such a slow, miserable start to the 2023 season certainly isn’t ideal, I’ve said time and time again, everyone really just needs to have some patience here as the team gets healthy.
At the very least, let’s get 15-20 games under our belts before panic-mode sets in.
Realistically, the baseball season doesn’t really begin until June 1st, but that’s not to say the Phillies don’t need to win some games along the way. Starting the season 0-4 obviously sucks and Phillies fans are certainly going through it, but again, it’s still the first week of April.
Strahm takes the mound tonight
The Phillies are back in action tonight with Matt Strahm on the mound, who hasn’t made a real start in four years. Strahm will be capped at 65 pitches, which means the Phillies will have to rely on their bullpen, which has literally been everything but reliable over the first four games of the season.
There have already been four different relief outings where a Phillies’ bullpen pitcher has allowed at least three runs without recording more than one out.
- Yunior Marte
- Gregory Soto
- Craig Kimbrel
- Seranthony Dominguez
The Phillies have two left in the Bronx before returning home to Citizens Bank Park on Thursday to face the Cincinnati Reds.
Hang tight everyone. We’ll be fine, eventually.
Huge thanks to Phans of Philly. We have a nice video coming soon. Unfortunately, my iPhone is somewhere in the Bronx so we’re down some content but as always, we’ll figure something out. Will also recap exactly what happened with the situation unfolding in the video below.
Cheers.
