#HowieSZN: Updated look at Eagles’ salary cap ahead of NFL Draft

We are just three weeks away from the NFL draft, and the Eagles are sitting pretty with two first-round selections.
In addition to their draft capital, Philadelphia has also freed up a nice amount of salary cap space. Here’s an updated look at each team following the first wave of free agency:

After opening the new league year with roughly $5.7M in cap space, the Eagles now have the seventh-most salary, with nearly $20M available. GM Howie Roseman created more relief by restructuring the contracts of Lane Johnson and Jake Elliott while bringing Darius Slay’s cap number down with a new deal. He’s also been diligent about signing external cost-friendly free agents:
- RB Rashad Penny: one-year, $1.35M
- CB Greedy Williams: one-year, $1.35M
- S Justin Evans: one-year, $1.59M
- S Terrell Edmunds: one-year, $2M
- LB Nicholas Morrow: one-year, $1.15M
- DT Kentavius Street: onr-year, $1.28M
- QB Marcus Mariota: one-year, $5M
The Eagles are likely preparing for Jalen Hurts’ looming extension, which is projected to command upwards of $50M/year. Roseman hasn’t been bashful about the team’s desire to keep Hurts long-term, so it’s only a matter of time before a deal gets done.
“We want him here long term,” Roseman told reporters via Dave Spadaro. “He’s going into the last year of his deal and that’s going to be a priority for us to extend him. We have a great relationship with him.”
“You have to navigate the offseason understanding that we’re not going to lose our franchise quarterback with one year left on his deal. Whatever that means, it means that 2024 is going to look different. We’re not going to have a quarterback on a rookie deal.”
