Report: Eagles are making a ‘late push’ on Ohio State WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba entering NFL Draft week

NFL Draft week is finally upon us. There have countless rumors surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles throughout this entire process. From Texas RB Bijan Robinson being the top target to possible trade scenarios, we’ve just about everything you could imagine in regards to the Eagles draft plans this year.
The latest rumor nugget comes from Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, who reported the Eagles were making a “late push” on Ohio State star wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Pauline on the Eagles interest in Smith-Njigba:
“After speaking with more than two dozen people I don’t think there is any doubt Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the first receiver selected in the 2023 NFL Draft,” Pauline writes. “I heard two interesting nuggets on Smith-Njiba this weekend. First, the Philadelphia Eagles are making a late push on the wideout and doing a lot of work on him in recent days.”

GM Howie Roseman is as thorough as it gets when it comes to draft prep. This could just be Howie crossing his T’s and dotting his I’s as the draft rapidly approaches. Or, as Pauline suggests, the Eagles are seriously considering drafting Smith-Njigba with their tenth overall selection.
Howie typically plays his cards pretty close to his chest. I wouldn’t say WR is completely off the board for the Eagles at tenth overall, but it doesn’t feel like the smartest use of that pick. Going with a wideout at 30 or with a later pick feels like the more likely scenario.
While adding a talent like Smith-Njigba to an already loaded WR room with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith is certainly enticing, going with a defensive or offensive lineman at ten is more in line with Roseman’s philosophy. I have a feeling the team likes Quez Watkins as the WR3 more than the general public, and the addition of former Falcons wideout Olamide Zaccheaus adds assurance incase Watkins fails to bounce back in 2023.
In the end, it’s almost impossible to get a gauge on where the Eagles are leaning entering the NFL Draft. We’ll find out what their plans are soon enough.
