Makai Lemon italian

Nick Sirianni could not wait to tell Vic Fangio how badly Makai Lemon mispronounced gnocchi, and he was way off

The Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver room is officially in good hands. Makai Lemon went to Saloon for dinner. Not a hot take from me: Saloon is one of the best Italian restaurants in the city, if not the best.

He got the lobster. He got the pasta. And he ordered the gi-no-chee. Not gnocchi.

Makai Lemon told Nick Sirianni he got the gi-no-chee, and his head coach immediately had to rat him out to his fellow paisan:

I don’t know where the “gi” came from. I don’t know where the second syllable went. What I do know is that Nick Sirianni heard it, laughed about it, and ran straight to Vic Fangio like a kid telling his dad what happened at school. Two Italian American men, both coaches for the Philadelphia Eagles, absolutely beside themselves.

I can’t be too hard on Lemon here, but I also can’t fully let him off. I grew up in an Italian family. I’ve been eating gnocchi since before I could read a menu. When I was 10 years old, I was at a family dinner with friends, and one of the adults turned to the table, completely serious, and announced that “the no-keys are so good here.” I felt something break inside me.

I sat there staring at my plate, a 10-year-old kid who knew better, completely powerless to intervene. I let it go. The no-keys were, apparently, excellent.

Makai Lemon ordered the gi-no-chee. I feel that same thing breaking again. What hurts even more is Anthony DiBona misspelling it in his tweet, but I can only take so much nonsense.

At least Lemon got the food right. The lobster and pasta at Saloon are legitimately excellent. His pronunciation needs work, but his taste is impeccable, and that counts for something.

Sirianni and Fangio are going to eat this kid alive all summer. I’d wager the gi-no-chee clip follows him to training camp. And rightfully so.
