Masterclass: How the Eagles turned Carson Wentz into multiple franchise cornerstones

The first round of the 2023 NFL Draft has come to a close, and the Eagles walked away with two talents that were widely considered the top of their class.
After trading up ahead of Chicago to select star DT Jalen Carter, edge-rusher Nolan Smith fell right into their laps at No. 30 overall. Dating back to last year, the Eagles have now added four of the best players from a defense that won two straight National titles — and it’s partially thanks to Carson Wentz.
In fact, Wentz is responsible for the acquisitions of several key players on Philadelphia’s roster. Here’s a trade-by-trade breakdown of how it all worked out.

In summation, Howie Roseman found a way to turn Carson Wentz’s $128M contract and the No. 6 overall pick in 2021 into DeVonta Smith, Jordan Davis, AJ Brown, and Jalen Carter.
Additionally, the quarterback he drafted in 2020 as an insurance policy, Jalen Hurts, is now the face of the franchise and among the NFL’s highest-paid players.
