Phillies’ offense explodes against Washington, destroy the Nationals 19-4

After scoring just one run on Friday night, the Philadelphia 76ers dominated the Washington Nationals yesterday in South Philly, winning 19-4.
The Phillies fell behind 1-0 after Dominic Smith hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning off Zack Wheeler. Wheeler didn’t have his best stuff yesterday, pitching just five innings while allowing seven hits and four earned runs. He did however strikeout six Nationals’ at the plate and earned the win to improve to 7-4 on the season.
Alec Bohm tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a ground ball single to centerfield that scored Bryce Harper. In the bottom of the third, Harper gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead in a force out to Nationals’ first baseman Dominic Smith to score Kyle Schwarber.
From there, the flood gates opened.

- Josh Harrison hit a sac fly to right field to score Bryce Harper
- Alec Bohm hit a two-run home run.
- Cristian Pache hit a double to left field to score Edmundo Sosa.
The Phillies took a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning and the runs kept on coming, with Nick Castellanos hitting a two-run home run to centerfield.
Alec Bohm then hit his second home run of the day, which was a two-run shot to centerfield to give the Phillies an 11-1 lead.
The Phillies kept the runs coming in the bottom of the fifth inning with a Castellanos RBI double and a Harper RBI single, followed by an overturned challenge that scored Castellanos.
Alec Bohm, who was 4-for-5 on the day, hit an RBI single to give the Phillies a 15-4 lead over the Nationals. Kyle Schwarber then buried the Washington Nationals with home run No. 22, a grand slam to right center field to score Harrison, Bohm, and Pache.

The Phillies are now 19-6 (.760) since June 3rd, which is good for the second-best record in Major League Baseball during that span. The Atlanta Braves keep winning ballgames and currently hold an 11-game lead over the Phillies in the National League Standings. In second place, the Miami Marlins (48-36) have a three game advantage over the third place Phillies.
In the National League Wild Card, the Phillies remain in close contention, just 1.5 games behind the San Francisco Giants for the final spot.
Ranger Suarez will take the mound today as the Phillies look to win the series against the Nationals. They’ll then head out on the road for the final six games before the All-Star break, with series’ against the Tampa Bay Rays and Miami Marlins.
