Eagles Week 1 PFF Grades: Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis post elite marks against New England; AJ Brown leads the way offensively

With Week 1 in the books, it’s time for some Philadelphia Eagles PFF grades analysis.
Philly started out hot, jumping out to a 16-0 lead thanks in large part to two Patriots turnovers in the first quarter, one of them being a Darius Slay pick-six. New England hung around, though, climbing back into the game and nearly stealing the victory from the Eagles in the final minutes.
Nevertheless, Philadelphia came out on top by a score of 25-20 and now that we have our hands on the official Pro Football Focus grades from Week 1, we have plenty to talk about.

AJ Brown, Jason Kelce, and DeVonta Smith lead the way offensively
The Eagles offense was lackluster for much of the afternoon against New England. They could only muster 251 total yards of offense, compared to the Patriots’ 382. Looking at the team’s PFF grades from this week and there’s a lot left to be desired here.
AJ Brown was the highest-graded player on the Eagles offense in Week 1, posting a 72.7 overall grade. He finished as the team’s leading receiver as well, hauling in seven receptions for 79 yards.
DeVonta Smith was pretty active in the passing game as well, earning a 70.4 offensive grade for his Week 1 performance, good for third-best on the offensive side of the ball. Jason Kelce was the only other offensive player with a grade higher than 70, posting a 72.1 mark.
As for the rest of Nick Sirianni’s offense, they weren’t great. Jalen Hurts in particularly was pretty underwhelming (more on him later), but the real head scratcher was how poorly the offensive line played as a whole. Both of the tackles, Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata, didn’t play up to their standards.
Johnson finished the game with an overall grade of 58.4, which is the lowest single-game PFF grade Lane has earned since Week 11 of the 2020 season where he graded out at 47.8. Mailata’s 52.0 offensive grade was the second-worst grade he’s earned from PFF since the 2021 season when he became a full-time starter at LT.
Maybe it was the bad weather, maybe it was because Bill Belichick is a defensive guru. Whatever the reasons are for the Eagles poor offensive execution on Sunday, they’ll have to figure it out quickly with Minnesota coming to town Thursday night.
Jalen Hurts struggles in Week 1
It’s certainly not time to panic, but Jalen Hurts was bad in Week 1. I know, I know, he’s Jalen Hurts and everything will be fine. But we have to call a spade a spade here.
Hurts’ 58.0 offensive grade for Sunday would have been the second-worst grade he posted all of last season. He completed 66 percent of his throws for 170 yards and a touchdown, along with an additional 37 yards on the ground.
It wasn’t a terrible performance from Hurts in Week 1. Aside from the crucial fumble in the fourth quarter, Hurts took care of the ball and did manage to make some solid throws – most notably his touchdown toss to Smitty. But it certainly wasn’t up to the standard he set for himself in 2022.
Judging Week 1 is always difficult because of a ton of factors, so I’m not going to start piling on Hurts – or anyone on the offense for that matter – from the jump. They just have to be more effective moving forward, from the top down. They know that, too, and there’s no reason to believe they can’t correct what went wrong against New England in the coming weeks.

Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Reed Blankenship lead the way defensively
The defensive side of the ball was much more promising than the offensive side. Mostly because the two former Bulldogs, Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, wreaked havoc up front all day in Week 1.
Carter posted elite marks in his NFL debut, grading out at 92.1. It was the second-best grade of any interior defensive lineman in Week 1, behind only DeForest Buckner (92.5). He was a wrecking ball all afternoon, recording eight pressures and a sack. His eight total pressures led the entire NFL during opening weekend.
Then we had Davis, who didn’t pop as much with his pass rush, but posted solid marks in the run game, finishing with a 75.8 run-defense grade along with an overall grade of 85.3.
Another new starter, S Reed Blankenship, came in third in PFF’s grading of the Eagles defense on Sunday. He ended the game with an overall grade of 82.6 and an impressive 87.2 tackling grade. Unfortunately, Blankenship will be out for this Thursday’s contest against Minnesota.
With both him and CB James Bradberry on this week’s injury report, the Eagles secondary will have their work cut out for them against Justin Jefferson and Co. Hopefully, Carter and Davis continue their hot streak up front and make life a living hell for Kirk Cousins.
