Flyers Weekly Recap #1: One goal in two games
Two boring losses in a row against the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders? The Flyers are back ladies and gentlemen.
In all seriousness, training camp is starting to heat up with the regular season lurking right around the corner. Let’s dive into the last week for the Philadelphia Flyers as we trek through the early preseason.
1 Goal in 2 Games
After I spent the offseason complaining about preseason games not being broadcasted on television… I’m glad they haven’t been broadcasted.
The Flyers started the season with two of the most boring hockey games you will ever witness. It began with a 6-0 blowout by the New Jersey Devils and ended with a 2-1 loss in Long Island to the Islanders. The only goal scored by the Flyers came from projected fourth-liner Ryan Poehling.
GOAL!

I’ve never cared about preseason results, and considering the Flyers iced the least interesting lineup possible in New York I wouldn’t dive into specifics too much. Sean Couturier made his return to play against New Jersey and might I say he’s already looking efficient all things considered.
More importantly, it was about seeing a couple of long-awaited returns to the Flyers locker room, and it felt like we were going to have that until we learned about Cam Atkinson.
Cam Atkinson is back… hopefully
Cam Atkinson was slated to play in the first contest against New Jersey and exited the lineup at the last minute due to lower body soreness. It reasonably caused a stir in the fanbase and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking “Not again.”
No Cam Atkinson in warmups. He was supposed to play tonight, but I guess not. Wade Allison will play for him.

The good news is that Atkinson is on the ice for practice this morning after a couple of days of rest.

I truly hope this was minor and nothing that could potentially linger around and hinder his return. Atkinson has had a massive presence in that locker room and you have to imagine John Tortorella is eager to finally coach him again.
Time will tell all in that regard but it’s a breath of fresh air to get positive news. This organization has given me PTSD when it comes to injuries and day-to-day labels so I’ll always take them with a grain of salt.
The First Five Cuts
The Flyers announced their first five cuts of training camp which include Jonathan Fauchon, Sam Sedley, Carter Sotheran, Denver Barkey, and Oliver Bonk.
It’s a predictable first round of cuts with some of the fresh draftees returning to their respective junior leagues. Oliver Bonk has already queued up his ELC and looks to take more strides while Denver Barkey is already being regarded as a draft-day steal.
Denver Barkey has been impressive in both rookie games. Smart player it seems, has a knack for the puck.

This is his second power play assist over the two games. Zayde Wisdom with a nice finish, being rewarded for his hustle on Friday. pic.twitter.com/fNAhno3SBw
Keep an eye on Bonk and Barkey and the London Knights in the OHL this season. I’ve truly liked what I’ve seen out of Oliver Bonk, he’s a bit raw as far as his physique but the tools are undeniably there.
He has a tremendous support system with Dale Hunter and his father played in the league for over a decade. You can consider me a big buyer of his stock as his training camp closes.
Episode 100 – The Liberty Yell
We released our 100th episode of The Liberty Yell this week and the timing of it was perfect. We broke down all of the storylines as the Flyers started training camp and we even brought Derek Dunn on to join the conversation.
To everyone who has followed, supported, and interacted with us, I thank you. The delightful part about this to me is having people listen to my opinions and build off of them to spark a conversation. Even through the bad years when the on-ice product was lacking, it has been the community that has kept the passion and love of the organization there for me.
We plan to have episodes drop every Monday and you can expect to see these recaps (or ramblings) every Thursday. Cheers to our fifth season and the first year of burnt orange.
