Joel Embiid drops 50 burger on Minnesota Timberwolves’ top ranked defense

Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers hosted the NBA-leading Minnesota Timberwolves last night in South Philadelphia looking to for a statement win after the a lollipop schedule for the first three weeks of December.

The Timberwolves entered last night boasting a 20-5 record with the top ranked defense in the NBA. As for the Sixers, they were looking to bounce back after an ugly home loss to the lowly Chicago Bulls.

The result was a 127-113 victory with Joel Embiid dropping a 50-burger on the T-Wolves top ranked defense. Trust me, I understand that Sixers fans are keeping this team at arms length this season but here’s why last night was important.

If anyone logged onto Twitter last night or any time in between the Sixers home loss to the Chicago Bulls and last night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, “NBA Twitter” was flooded with outlandish comments about the Philadelphia 76ers inability to beat good basketball teams and the only reason that Joel Embiid was putting up insane numbers over the past few weeks was due to the fact that his opponents were bottom feeders in the standings.

It was annoying for sure, but when you go on a stretch like this, criticism and doubt in the Sixers is understandable.

76ers Month of December: (7-2)

  • 76ers at Celtics: 125-119 (L)
  • 76ers at Wizards: 131-126 (W)
  • Hawks at 76ers: 125-114 (W)
  • Wizards at 76ers: 101-146 (W)
  • 76ers at Pistons: 129-111 (W)
  • Pistons at 76ers: 92-124 (W)
  • 76ers at Hornets: 135-82 (W)
  • Bulls at 76ers: 108-104 (L)
  • Timberwolves at 76ers: 127-113 (W)

Note: That the loss against the Celtics on December 1st came without Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey playing so basically, the 76ers only dropped one game this month 3 weeks in while Joel Embiid has shockingly figured out away to be better than he was during his MVP season last year.

Anyways, that brought us to last night. The Minnesota Timberwolves were in South Philadelphia, boasting the best record in the Western Conference and the highest rated defense in the entire NBA. The T-Wolves are a big ass team, stacked with centers like Rudy Gobert, Karl Anthony-Towns, and Naz Reed.

You had dorks on social media saying Joel Embiid under 46.5 points + rebounds was “the greatest play of all time” because the against the T-Wolves not a single center has beaten that line in 144 STRAIGHT GAMES.

On top of that the T-Wolves allow the second least points and rebounds to centers this season. Entering last night it was nearly TWO YEARS since a Center has been over on the 46.5 points + rebounds line against them.

Of course, Joel Embiid and his ability to keep his elite scoring run in tact was in question but literally none of that mattered. Someone better check on Alex Caruso because he’s getting COOKED on Twitter.

Embiid torched the Timberwolves. The Process shot 17-25 from the floor to go along with 17-18 from the free throw line. He scored 51 points with 12 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 3 assists on the night.

Joel Embiid & Tyrese Maxey: 86 PTS | 13 REB | 8 AST

Along with the reigning MVP, Tyrese Maxey dominated as well, shooting 12-24 from the floor and 5-12 from three point range to notch 35 points and 5 assists. Embiid and Maxey who are slowly but surely morphing into the reincarnation of Shaq and Kobe, combined for 86 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists.

INSANE: Joel Embiid is now averaging 35.1 points, 11.8 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 24 games this season.

With last night’s win against the Timberwolves, the Sixers improved to 19-8 on the season. They are two games behind the first place Boston Celtics and one game behind the second place Milwaukee Bucks.

Up next, the Sixers will host the Toronto Raptors tomorrow night before heading to Miami to face the Heat on Christmas Day, which as we all know, is the unofficial start of the 2023-24 NBA season.
