Phillies avoid arbitration with 4 out of 5 players ahead of Thursday night deadline
The Philadelphia Phillies avoided arbitration with four out the five players eligible yesterday, agreeing to one-year contracts with Ranger Suarez, Gregory Soto, Jeff Hoffman, and Edmundo Sosa.
The only player that did not reach an agreement ahead of yesterday’s deadline, was Alec Bohm.Â
Phillies agree to one-year contracts with 4 of 5 arbitration eligible players
Arbitration Numbers
- Ranger Suárez, $5.05 million
- Gregory Soto, $5 million
- Jeff Hoffman, $2.2 million
- Edmundo Sosa, $1.7 million
Bohm and the Phillies had until 8PM yesterday to agree on a contract for the upcoming season and failed to do so. According to reports, Bohm is seeking around $4 million for next season, while the Phillies countered at $3.4 million.
Even with no agreement yesterday, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Bohm and the Phillies will head to an arbitration hearing, which has the potential to last into Spring Training. Last year, Dominguez and Alvarado didn’t reach an agreement and then avoided a hearing while both signing multi-year extensions so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bohmer take a similar route.Â
We’re now almost two weeks into January and the Phillies have been relatively quiet this offseason, with the only big move happening by re-signing Aaron Nola to a seven-year, $172 million in mid-November. We’ll see what Johnny Mids and Uncle Dave have up their sleeves with Spring Training roughly a month away.
