Jeffery Lurie will give Nick Sirianni a chance to present a plan for the future, Eagles head coach already working with Howie Roseman on changes to the coaching staff
Jeffery Lurie and the Philadelphia Eagles appear to be close on their decision regarding current head coach Nick Sirianni and his future with the organization.
Despite losing six out of their last seven games (including playoffs), it appears that the Eagles will continue to do their due diligence and give Sirianni a chance to present a plan for the future, which will ultimately decide his fate with the team moving forward.
According to Dianna Russini from The Athletic, Sirianni and GM Howie Roseman are actively strategizing about bringing in new coordinators and coaches to replace the current slop holding positions on their staff.
Nick Sirianni and Howie Roseman working on plan for the future
“Both Eagles GM Howie Roseman and HC Nick Sirianni have been reaching out to available NFL coaches and coordinators, as well as coaching agents across the league to evaluate potential coordinator candidates to join their coaching staff as they plan for the 2024 season” [Dianna Russini – The Athletic]
That report makes sense given the fact that there were other reports, including one from Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, stating that Sirianni is expected to present a plan to Jeffery Lurie which need to include staff changes at both defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator.
Rapoport: ‘I would expect significant changes’ after Jeffery Lurie’s meeting with Nick Sirianni
Not out of the mud yet…
So yeah, Sirianni and Roseman are busy at work creating a new plan for the future. The kicker, is that if Jeffery Lurie likes the plan for the future and Sirianni is open to such changes, he will likely stay as Eagles coach. If Lurie doesn’t approve of the plan for the future, the Eagles could move in a different direction.
In my opinion, the Eagles would be better cleaning house and starting over next season with a brand new coaching staff. Things just got way too sour by the end of the season and regardless of what’s being said in the locker room, with players showing their support for Nick Sirianni, it would just be much more clean to cut ties and start over.
However, retaining Sirianni while adding proven offensive and defensive coordinators to the coaching staff isn’t the worst idea either.
Sirianni has been with the Eagles for three seasons. He went 9-8 the first year and lost in the Wild Card to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His sophomore campaign gave Eagles fans a 14-3 season and a Super Bowl appearance. This season, as we all know, was plagued by a nightmare finish and after starting the year 10-1 the Eagles finished a miserable 11-6 and were embarrassed in the Wild Card at the hands of Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers.
Trust me, I am well aware that there is plenty of blame to go around for what happened to the Eagles next season.
On the organizational chart, it starts with Howie Roseman then goes down to Nick Sirianni. That’s just how it works.
I will say, having two new rookie offensive and defensive coordinators seemed to have a severely negative impact on the team so if they can get the right pieces and Sirianni sticks around, so be it.
Recently memory shows that this type of ultimatum from Jeffery Lurie was used in the past.
When Doug Peterson wasn’t willing to make changes to his coaching staff, Lurie decided to part ways with his Super Bowl winning head coach. It’s safe to assume that Sirianni knows there needs to be drastic changes and the fact that he’s working with Roseman already on building a new coaching staff would suggest that he’s willing to make them to keep his job.
