White Flag Waved: 76ers punt on 2023-24 season, dump salaries on NBA Trade Deadline day
Deep breaths. Okay so basically, the Philadelphia 76ers have completely given up on the 2023-2024 basketball season.

Yeah, it’s over.
How do you like Josh Harris, Daryl Morey, and I guess Elton Brand completely waiving the white flag at the NBA Trade Deadline? After it was reported that the Sixers were going to be “buyers” at the deadline, the complete opposite happened. It turns out that Morey and Company were doing their best to get under all the tax thresholds so they have a clean book at the end of this season.Â
Note: It also means that Joel Embiid returning this season was pretty much dead in the water. If there was a chance that Embiid would be healthy for the playoffs, it’s easy to imagine the Sixers would have went a different route.Â
Instead, the only money guaranteed next season is Joel Embiid’s salary and Tyrese Maxey’s cap hold. The only other player next season that could be guaranteed is Paul Reed but that only happens if he’s on the roster and the Sixers somehow, some way make the 2nd round of the playoffs – so cross that one off the list.
Paul Reed: Talk about a guy who did NOT progress the way the Sixers planned anyways so thank god we aren’t stuck with that shitty contract they signed for whatever reason over the Summer. Anyone with half a brain knew that was a disaster waiting to happen.Â
Here’s the problem. The free agent class at the end of this year is pretty slim pickings. I don’t see a name on the list that would make me overly excited heading into the 2024-25 season, do you?Â
Top 2024 Free Agents…Yikes
- Paul George
- Pascal Siakam
- LeBron James
- Jrue Holiday
- Tobias Harris
- DeMar DeRozan
- Immanuel Quickley
- James Harden
- OG Anunoby
I guess we’ll stay tuned for the always fun Veteran Buyout Market to see whatever sad saps decide to join the train derailment this season. That’ll be fun, right?….RIGHT?
