Sean Couturier named Captain of the Philadelphia Flyers
Lo and behold, the Flyers announce Sean Couturier as the 20th Captain in the franchise’s 57-year history.
He becomes the successor of the Flyers longest-tenured Captain Claude Giroux who wore the ‘C’ for nearly a decade.
Although deserved, the move comes as a shock for many. The Flyers Head Coach John Tortorella announced last season that the Flyers would not have a Captain for the 2023 season, citing that he wanted to hear other voices step up during times of adversity.
Safe to say that Tortorella was impressed by Couturier’s leadership.
Couturier has been on the Flyers for 12 seasons, totaling 493 points (191 goals, 302 assists) in 771 games. In the 2019-2020 season, he was awarded the Frank J. Selke trophy, which is awarded to the best defensive forward in the league.
In August of 2021, Couturier signed an 8-year extension with the Flyers through the 2029-2030 season with an average cap hit of $7.75 million.
The forward has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career, his most recent being a back injury that saw him miss 22 months after setbacks during his recovery.
It was just 5 days ago when Tortorella challenged the veteran who was seemingly “going through the motions” against the Seattle Kraken.
In the third period, Kraken forward Jared McCann shot the puck which deflected off of Couturier’s stick and past goaltender Cal Petersen.
If it were any other player, Tortorella would have likely been a bit less harsh, but he knows Couturier’s defensive capabilities – and they weren’t on display.
After an earful from Tortorella, Coots became a man on a mission. Just a few minutes later, he deflected Travis Sanheim’s shot to score the eventual game-winning goal.
Along with the announcement of Sean Couturier as the Flyers’ new Captain, Travis Konecny was announced as an Alternate Captain alongside Scott Laughton.
The honor is well deserved for Konecny, whom many fans advocated for in regards to becoming the next Captain.
Although Konecny resembles the grittiness and passion that is Philadelphia, Couturier reflects the city in a much different way.
No matter how many times we get knocked down, we always get back up.
