The Massacre Continues: Phillies lose chain-linked embroidered patches on front of uniforms in 2024 as Nike continues to butcher MLB jerseys
Yesterday, we discussed the new Major League Baseball uniforms and how Nike has basically destroyed all that was right with them in year’s past.
While the majority of the internet continues to blame Fanatics for butchering our beloved MLB jerseys, the Michael Rubin owned company is simply a subcontractor for Nike, who is responsible for the uniform overhaul.
Notable Changes to MLB Uniforms in 2024:
- Addition of a Sun Collar
- Narrowed Name Placket
- Fabric Change (Nike Vapor Technology)
- Reduced Size of NOB lettering
- Home Uniforms are now “Off-White”
- Belt Loops
As if things couldn’t get worse, one the final two teams in Major League Baseball that utilized a special chain-linked embroidery on the front of their jerseys have fallen.
First, it was revealed the St. Louis Cardinals would be forced to undergo a major change in their new uniforms by not embroidering on the front of their jerseys. Instead the new Nike Jerseys forced the Cards to re-create their signature chain-stitched embroidery by utilizing two separate patches.
The Cardinals however, were able to keep the chain-linked embroidery look alive on the 2024 jerseys.
For those of you who pay attention to this type of stuff, there was a strong feeling that the Philadelphia Phillies would be spared from “jersey execution” given the fact that they also use chain-stitched embroidery on two separate patches for their front-jersey script.
I regret to inform you that is no longer the case.

The Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals were the last of a dying breed in class and jersey perfection.
They have now been castrated by Nike but I guess Cards fans can be happy about the chain-linked embroidery remaining in-tact, right? Here in Philly, we’ve been massacred.
After getting a closer look at the new-look jerseys yesterday in Spring Training, Paul Lukas and the legends over at UniWatch broke the news that the Phillies’ front jersey script will no longer be two, chain-linked embroidered patches.
Instead, Nike is forcing the Phillies to switch things up and move forward with “tackle twill” (stitching on the outside of basically a fabric patch) instead of their signature chain-linked embroidered script we have seen in the past.

Dear lord. What on Earth is Nike doing?
While the small details might not seem like a big deal, this is more about what Nike and Fanatics are doing with all professional sports uniforms and merchandise. Everything looks “cheap” and poorly made instead of highlighting the small details that made a team’s jerseys and uniforms special.
I don’t like it. It’s annoying and as a result, the fans and products suffer.
Listen, I know pretty much everyone is blaming Fanatics and they are a company that continuously fucks up sports apparel and merchandise but we need to be fair and honest about who’s at fault here.
The new MLB jerseys in 2024 were designed by Nike. Fanatics is the subcontractor that is producing the jerseys.
Yes, that means Nike is also to blame for all of the very bad City Connect Jerseys which will be officially released this week. We’ll see if this nightmare version of the Phillies’ City Connect is true..
Fanatics will however, be taking over the NHL uniform contract next season. The difference between what they are currently doing with Major League Baseball jerseys is that they will actually be handling the designing (not just manufacturing) for the NHL.

What do you expect of Nike. They f up everything they touch and the Phillies uniforms are about the worst thing I have ever seen.
Agreed!
