“Whiz” Whit Merrifield likes his new nickname, as long as you don’t spell his name wrong
New Phillies super-utility man and human rake Whit Merrifield has been welcomed to the city and organization. Not only is he a great addition to an already strong roster, but his name also sets up perfectly for an even stronger nickname: Whiz Wit.
When asked about it, Whit Merrifield said he’s a fan of his new moniker but isn’t one for onions on his cheesesteak:
New Phillie Whit Merrifield says he likes the nickname Whiz Whit as long as Phillies fans spell it right. But he is a Whiz Whitout cheesesteak guy, doesn’t like the onions! 😂😂

This reminds me of a great quote by former Philadelphia mayor Cecil B. Moore. “I don’t care what you write about me. Just spell my damn name right.”
Also, how do you misspell Whit? I figured Merrifield would be the more difficult name to spell, but who am I to deny his lived experience?’
Regardless, it’s great to have him here, and I personally pledge to spell his name correctly each and every time. Even when I’m needlessly rage-tweeting from the 300-level of The Bank after a few too many Surfsides in the summer heat.
I will say, I’m a touch disappointed in the lack of onions on his steak, but to each their own. There are a dozen ways to skin a cat and even more ways to eat a cheesesteak; all power to Whit on this one.
There has been a shift in the cheesesteak realm I’d like to address as well, and it’s come up more often with the emergence of the Whiz Whit Merrifield nickname. More and more people are coming out against cheese whiz, opting for Cooper Sharp instead.
In and of itself, that’s perfectly fine by me. Both are extremely valid options.
What rubs me the wrong way is the way in which people say that they prefer Cooper Sharp. To them, it’s more than a cheesesteak preference, like it’s some kind of centuries-old secret passed down from Ben Franklin that only people who are #FromHere will understand.
Again, Cooper Sharp slaps. I’m literally eating a cheesesteak with Cooper Sharp and hot peppers as I type this. I get this is a sandwich town, and we take pride in our various combinations of meat, cheese, and bread.
I just don’t understand the superiority complex some people have about preferring one type of processed cheese over another. But what do I know? I’m just a (not even remotely) humble blogger.
