Sweet Irony: 76ers to build Allen Iverson sculpture at the team practice facility to be unveiled April 12

The 76ers have finally done something to honor Allen Iverson’s legacy, but managed to do so in one of the the most ironic ways possible.

The 76ers announced a new Allen Iverson sculpture at their Camden practice facility:

Most important Sixers announcement in the time I’ve been covering the time: Allen Iverson gets a sculpture pic.twitter.com/uusGbFawQO

You read that right. Practice.

Of course, the irony of an AI sculpture at the 76ers’ practice facility is just too sweet. But even so, he’s earned his place on the “76ers Legends Walk” without a doubt. The sculpture will be unveiled on April 12, and Iverson will be honored at the Wells Fargo Center on April 14.

I was a little annoyed at first that we weren’t getting an AI statue at the Wells Fargo Center. But after a few moments of reflection, I realized why the organization would be hesitant to build a statue in front of an arena they’re planning to vacate in the semi-near future.

Honestly, I’m still not thrilled about the location of the project. Fan-favorite Allen Iverson gets a statue but no fans can actually see it? The whole thing is just very Sixers.
