WATCH: Zack Wheeler’s new Splitter is absolute FILTH

Last week, the Phillies and Zack Wheeler agreed to a three-year contract worth $126 million, a $42 million AAV.

Since joining the Phillies in 2020, Wheeler has posted a 3.06 ERA, with 675 strikeouts, as well as a 42-25 record over 101 starts in a Phillies uniform. Wheeler also is second in all-time postseason WHIP at .726 and leads the stat when there is a minimum of 40 innings pitched – carrying  a 4-3 record over 10 postseason starts with a 2.42 ERA and 68 strikeouts.

All of Wheeler postseason appearances have been with the Phillies. He’s been in the NL Cy Young conversation three out of the last four seasons and finished as a runner-up to Corbin Burnes in 2021.

A New Weapon Added to Zack Wheeler’s Arsenal

Wheeler has been hard at work this Spring working on adding a new pitch to his arsenal to improve his dominance on the mound and we’ve already witnessed a small sample size earlier this week.

In it’s debut last week, Wheeler threw two splitters. One was a whiff and the other reached the backstop.

Not much of a sample size yet and the pitch is definitely a work in progress. However, during today’s start against the Yankees – we got more splitter-action and the results were filthy.

Zack Wheeler’s new splitter is absolute FILTH

Wheeler is hoping that his new weapon will help him against left-handed hitters, who slashed .261/.310/.412 against him last year. Note: Right-handed batters slashed just .194/.235/.313.

Fastball & Splitter Overlay is a PROBLEM

Things are definitely progressing nicely for Wheeler’s newest weapon in his already dominant pitching arsenal and 2024 is looking better and better for Zack Wheeler.
