Returning Eagles DB CJ Gardner-Johnson addresses fans and pays tribute to Kobe Bryant

Arguably the most anticipated press conference of all the Eagles free agent signings was going to be C.J. Gardner-Johnson due to what transpired in the past.

Obviously, everyone was looking forward to Saquon Barkley, but C.J. is a returning player who is not afraid to speak his mind. He began the presser by signing “Guess who’s back, back again?” as he strolled to the podium at the NovaCare practice facility on Friday.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Eagles fans

In 2022, C.J. was a standout for the Eagles, as he was tied for the league’s top spot with six interceptions despite being out five games due to a lacerated kidney. His knack for creating opportunities on the field, paired with his confident demeanor, proved to be a crucial part of the team that came so close to defeating Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Unfortunately, Gardner-Johnson parted ways with the Eagles during the last offseason after contract negotiations were never met, and instead, he joined the Detroit Lions.

He certainly didn’t have a quiet departure either. During his introduction with the Lions, he stated that the Lions’ roster seemed “a tad superior” to the Eagles Super Bowl squad. Later, he didn’t hold back his feelings towards the Philadelphia fans during a live stream, calling them “f—ing obnoxious. I f—ing can’t stand the f—ers.

But, sometimes in life time heals all wounds, and both Eagles fans and C.J. are welcoming each other back with open arms. This time, Gardner-Johnson will be wearing No. 8 to pay tribute to his favorite athlete, and local legend Kobe Bryant.

“Tapping into a different mentality is something that would be great to see this year. I’m on my Kobe mode right now, I’m coming out with the Mamba.”
