Report: Eagles in extension talks with WR DeVonta Smith

The Eagles have locked in several of their core players to new extensions this offseason; one of their star receivers could be next.

According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, WR DeVonta Smith is a ‘strong candidate’ to sign the next big extension with Philadelphia.

The Eagles are making efforts behind the scenes to get something done with 25-year-old [DeVonta] Smith. Contract talks are ongoing, sources familiar with negotiations said, and there’s general optimism that a deal will materialize in the near future.

Smith is under contract through 2024 at a base salary of just over $1 million. And the Eagles have until May 2 to exercise the fifth-year option on Smith’s rookie deal, which would come in around $16 million for the 2025 season, according to OverTheCap.

This news shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone who’s watched Smith over the years.

The former Heisman Trophy winner is arguably a top-10 player at his position and has the most receiving yards of any player in their first three seasons in Eagles history (3,178).

McManus notes that the Eagles have a well-established history of signing foundational players as early as possible, in part because they know the price tag will only go up.

It would be wise to finalize a deal before Justin Jefferson, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and JaMarr Chase reset the market.

Smith’s current projected market value is $22.8M/year, per Spotrac. Calvin Ridley got $92M over four years from Tennessee, and Michael Pittman Jr. is making $23.3M with the Colts.

Given his production, it’s likely Smitty gets more than those players. One thing is certain: DeVonta Smith isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

“DeVonta is an incredible person, incredible player; obviously homegrown, young guy,” GM Howie Roseman said at the scouting combine in February. “Without getting into specifics, those are guys you don’t really want to leave.”
