The Philadelphia Flyers disasterclass hit a new low last night following 9-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens

I’m not one to write about the Philadelphia Flyers for a laundry list of reasons but I’ll do my best to summarize with four quick bullet points below.

One: Hockey has been dead in the city of Philadelphia for over a decade (maybe two).

Two: Any team that’s run by a corporation with no true leadership doesn’t really appeal to my sports fandom.

Three: I’m always scared (not really) to select a featured image because I’m afraid those weirdos from the cancelled SB Nation Flyers blog will yell at me for not giving them proper credit.

Four: It was clear as day that this was exactly how the 2023-24 NHL season would end for the Flyers and I know better than to get my hopes up for playoff hockey.

Philadelphia Flyers Disasterclass

In typical Philadelphia fashion, the Flyers have absolutely crumbled down the stretch and last night might have been the most embarrassing loss to date. 

The Canadiens destroyed the Flyers 9-3 at Bell Centre in Montreal. The nine goals allowed by Philadelphia were the most allowed by the Flyers this season and the most under current head coach John Tortorella. 

The Flyers have now lost eight-straight games, their longest losing streak of the season.

During that span, they have been outscored 42-18 and have fallen behind 2-0 in five out of the eight losses.

On top of that, four of the eight losses were to teams in the bottom six of the NHL standings. 

Over the last 25 games, the Flyers are now 7-13-5.

So much for playoff hockey in Philadelphia, right? I mean hell, even I was excited there for a second. The Fink was even out there at Flyers watch parties! I mean seriously, that’s when you know things are out of hand in the city.

Note: Haven’t checked on Fink either but he’s battle tested. We live in the mud with the Sixers so the Flyers are meaningless.

With three games remaining, the Flyers are two points behind the Washington Capitals, who currently hold the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

Listen, I know the Flyers are technically still alive but this just seems like a slow death and watching this hockey team over the past month has been nothing short of a nightmare. I don’t even know what to think of John Tortorella these days.

This postgame presser last night was depressing. Torts is basically throwing in the towel. I mean trust me, I agree with him but I’m also not the head coach of the Flyers, ya know?

You know things are bad when I haven’t heard anything from Stumpo, Danny, or Derek in weeks. I am literally scared to check any of their social accounts for an update at this point but hopefully, one of them decides to read this post.

The Liberty Line Slack Channel was BUZZING all season long and now the TLY boys have gone Zero Dark Thirty on me. Not good.

Keep an eye out on any bridges you might pass in the Philly area and if you happen to cross paths, remind them that the Flyers were never supposed to be in the situation to begin with and none of this really matters. 

Playoffs…?!

Anyways, the Flyers are two points back of the Capitals for the final Wild Card spot in the East. The Capitals have played one less game than the Flyers and will close out the regular season in South Philly next Tuesday. Also ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers are the Penguins and Red Wings – both of which have a game in-hand.

After two months of battling anyone who stepped on the ice looking to take the third place spot in the Metro, the Flyers have done what the Flyers typically do and completely screwed things up down the stretch and all things considered, I think we can safely add them to the epic collapses the city of Philadelphia has endured over the past year.
