Stephens is the cousin of Steelers’ cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and was set to attend rookie minicamp in Pittsburgh before signing with Philly.
It’ll be an uphill battle for Stephens to stick on a depth chart that features top draft picks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, along with veterans Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, and Isaiah Rodgers.
Stephens is no stranger to adversity, however. He didn’t play for three seasons while tending to his sick mother and was denied transfer eligibility at Penn State in 2019 and Purdue in 2023.
In the two seasons he played at D-II level schools, Ferris State and West Liberty, he recorded 16 interceptions and was named All-American in 2022.
Stephens’ production didn’t earn him a Scouting Combine invite, but he did post impressive numbers at Michigan State’s Pro Day with a 4.3-second 40-yard dash and 19 reps on the 225-pound bench press.
At 5-foot-8, Stephens’ size is a limiting factor, but he could be a case of hard work beating talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
“I know how to overcome adversity,” Stephens said in a Draft Network Interview. “I’ve been through so much. No matter my position in life, I never stopped fighting.
