Phillies complete 4-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants while opposing fanbases complain over ‘cake walk’ May schedule

The Philadelphia Phillies completed a dominant four-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants yesterday, winning the series finale by a final score of 6-1 to improve to an MLB-best 25-11 on the season.

Zack Wheeler, back on his regular-scheduled rest, was filthy yesterday against the Giants. He allowed just one unearned run in seven innings of work while striking out 11.

Wheeler only allowed four hits and coughed up one walk in the winning effort and lowered his season ERA to a disgusting 1.64 over eight starts.

Wheeler is now is tied with Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow for the most strikeouts (63). He leads all pitchers with 1.8 WAR. His 1.64 ERA is fourth among qualified starters and he ranks sixth in the MLB with a 0.89 WHIP.

As the weather warms up heading into the summer season, so does Bryce Harper.

Yesterday, Bryce Harper went 2-for-4 from the plate – including an opposite field 3-run home run in the fifth inning.

Bryce Harper extends Phillies lead with Oppo 3-Run HR

Heat Check Bryce Harper: Up until April 28th, Harper hit just .234 with 6 home runs, 18 RBIs and a .798 OPS – Harper is batting .286 with two home runs (back-to-back nights) and 6 RBI to go along with a 1.135 OPS over his past seven games.

Better Times Ahead for the Philadelphia Phillies:

Kyle Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored yesterday.

JT Realmuto, hitting in the 2-hole while Trea Turner is on the 15-Day Injured list with a hamstring injury, went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Nick Castellanos went 2-for-4 with an RBI, two walks, and a run scored.

Whit Merrifield went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The ‘Cake Walk Schedule’ Narrative is Stupid:

The Fightins have won six straight games (5-0 in May) and have the best record in Major League Baseball at 25-11. They hold a 3-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East Standings.

Last week, I wrote an article saying that if we were being honest with ourselves, this baseball team shouldn’t lose a single game this month and has a great opportunity to be 20+ games over .500 entering June.

Can the Phillies control their schedule? Nope.

They can however, beat up on bad baseball teams – which they have struggled to do in the past and is something that good teams do on a regular basis.

The Phillies main goal in the month of May is to stack up wins ahead of what will be a much tougher schedule this summer while allowing Trea Turner to fully heal from a pesky hamstring injury.

Homestand Continues…

Tonight, the Phillies will open up a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park against the Toronto Blue Jays – a team that sits at the bottom of the AL East Standings with a 16-19 record. The Blue Jays are 8-12 on the road.

Cristopher Sanchez (1-3, 3.86 ERA) will be on the mound against Blue Jays’ pitcher Jose Berrios (4-2, 1.44 ERA).
