Philadelphia 76ers’ Tyrese Maxey has been officially named the 2023-24 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner. The Joe Dumars Trophy marks the second piece of hardware Maxey received this year – along with his Most Improved Player Award that was announced last month.
Tyrese Maxey’s parents surprised him with the Joe Dumars Trophy as winner of the 2023-24 NBA Sportsmanship Award
“It means a lot,” Maxey said after accepting the award from his father. “Sportsmanship means a lot to me. I know I go out there and play extremely hard, but I still respect all my teammates and all of my competitors. … Y’all taught me a lot, too. Y’all taught me how to play the game that I love with a lot of passion. But at the end of the day, win, lose or draw, you’ve got to respect your competitors and the guys that you’re playing against.”
Yeah…we’re going to have to change Tyrese Maxey’s mindset before next season.
Watch the wholesome video and then do everything possible to forget it.
Listen, Tyrese Maxey definitely deserves this type of award. He’s super nice, “always smiling” in the 76ers facilities, and rarely ever loses his cool to the media or on the basketball court.
Maxey, one of the NBA’s brightest young players, also made his first All-Star team in 2023-24 and averaged 25.9 points, 6.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 70 starts in his fourth season with the Philadelphia 76ers.
All that is fantastic. He’s a great kid. Hooper. Family man. Whatever.
Congratulations on the award but now it’s time to shift focus over to ascending into an absolute killer on the basketball court.
I’m not critizing Maxey. I just think having that “dog in him” on the court will elevate his game to new levels. I know I’m not alone in saying that as a 76ers fan, we all want him to be an absolute killer on the court next season.
His ascension into NBA Superstar Status depends on it. Hell, maybe he’ll even get a few more calls to fall in his favor when he’s driving through the paint?
We have witnessed handful of instances where “Maxey the Killer” took over a basketball game, most notably in the playoffs against the New York Knicks. We just need that throughout the entirety of the NBA season.

Presented since 1995-96, the NBA Sportsmanship Award honors the player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court.
All 30 NBA teams nominated one of their players for the award, and a panel of six league executives selected one finalist from each of the league’s six divisions. Current NBA players picked the winner from a list of six finalists.
Maxey received 91 first-place votes and 2,545 total points. Kevin Love (Miami Heat) finished second, followed by Jarrett Allen (Cleveland Cavaliers), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder), Harrison Barnes (Sacramento Kings) and Tre Jones (San Antonio Spurs).
