Mike Gansey may finally be the right Sixers hire and I really need you all to hear me out
Alright Sixers fans. Come close. I need to talk to you for a second.
I know we’ve been through it together. And I am not going to relay or even attempt to list the events over the last 10 years. It’s time to turn the page on that. Similarily to the AJ Brown saga. It’s time to move on. Something feels different right now. And I don’t say that lightly because I have been burned before.
Mike Gansey just walked into the building as the new President of Basketball Operations and within the first 48 hours of being on the job he said something so simple and so refreshing that I had to read it twice to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.

“I want fountains not drains.” Put it on a freaking t-shirt, Drew Smith. If you’re reading. Which, we both know you are…
Talk Is Cheap, But This Doesn’t Sound Like Talk
I know. I know what you’re thinking. We’ve heard good things before. We’ve been promised culture before. We’ve been told the plan before. So let me be clear, I’m not here to anoint anyone or hand out championships before a single game is played.
But there is something genuinely different about the way this man is communicating and I think it deserves to be acknowledged.
“We got to do the work,” Gansey said. “Obviously, draft coming up, for example, you’re talking to plenty of coaches, people that have been around these guys, and you want to bring in good people here. If they don’t want to be here, or you don’t feel they can fit with our culture, then we don’t want it. We want people that want to be in Philadelphia and we want guys that — I want competitiveness. I want toughness. I want guys that hate to lose. Those are the kind of people I’m going to try and target and want to bring onto this roster.”

Guys that hate to lose. Guys that want to be in Philadelphia. Competitiveness. Toughness. When is the last time someone running this franchise said something that simple and that direct? I genuinely cannot remember.
Jay Wright Just Gave Him the Philadelphia Seal of Approval
And if Gansey’s own words weren’t enough, Jay Wright chimmed in on X and delivered a message that should mean everything to this fanbase.
For all @sixers fans . We just got a great competitor – teammate and basketball mind in Mike Gansey . He's humble, intelligent and knows the game . High character and good people . Let's welcome him and jump on board ! https://t.co/BHHnmSUcIC

Let’s also not ignore the resume here because Gansey is not just a good talker. Since being promoted to GM of the Cavaliers in 2022, Gansey oversaw the addition of Max Strus, Sam Merrill, Jaylon Tyson, Tyrese Proctor, and Dean Wade, the kind of smart, high-character role player acquisitions that fueled Cleveland winning 64 games in 2024-25.
He has already worked with the two-star guard model, something directly applicable to building around Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. He knows how to find the right pieces to put around franchise players and he knows how to build a locker room that actually functions.
The biggest talking point centered around him will be what he decides to do with Joel Embiid. And, of course he addressed that today as well.
“Yeah, Joel’s ours right now. I’ve had great conversations with him … I’m actually going to see him in a couple days. We just gotta get Joel on the court. When he plays, we’re really good—he’s still a dominant force.”

Let’s go! That basically confirms Joel Embiid is back. The only right decision to make here. Let’s be honest.
Welcome to Philadelphia, Mike Gansey. We’ve been waiting for someone like you for a long time. I wish you luck with trying to fix a franchise as cursed as the Sixers. On the bright side, if you have any success, we are the most passionate fans in the world and we will fill up that arena on a nightly basis.
