NFL Rumors: Bleacher Report suggests Eagles trade CB James Bradberry to NFC team
After a horrific 2023 campaign, Eagles CB James Bradberry may be headed to a new team sooner rather than later.
Bradberry was absent from the two voluntary OTA practices that were open to the media, and one can assume he’s been away throughout the offseason. The Eagles drafted two stout cornerbacks in this year’s NFL Draft, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, essentially spelling the end of Bradberry’s tenure in Philadelphia.
GM Howie Roseman has two options at this juncture: he can designate Bradberry as a post-June 1st cut and spread the $15.1M dead cap over two seasons. Or, he can wait it out, hope another team sustains an injury at the position, and trade Bradberry for late-round draft capital.
If he opts for the latter, Bleacher Report has suggested a mock trade in which Philadelphia would send Bradberry to Arizona for a 2025 fifth-round pick.
Arizona Cardinals Receive:Â CB James Bradberry, 2025 fourth-round pick
Philadelphia Eagles Receive:Â 2025 fifth-round pick
The 30-year-old cover man enjoyed one of his best seasons when he arrived in 2022. But he was the embodiment of the Eagles’ collapse down the season’s final stretch last year. He was charged with giving up 11 touchdowns in coverage and a passer rating of 114.3 after giving up a 51.6 mark.
A combination of the change at defensive coordinator, a less effective pass rush and just plain old aging probably attributed to Bradberry’s jarring drop-off. Corner is a volatile position by nature, and he’s hitting an age where many players slow down.
Finding a trade partner could be difficult. The team taking on his contract would really be doing the Eagles a solid. Given Bradberry’s play and how much it would help the Eagles, it might take an NBA-style trade where the Eagles are essentially paying someone to take him off their roster.
The Cardinals are uniquely qualified to take them up on that. General manager Monti Ossenfort clearly likes working the phones, Gannon has experience coaching him, and they have $22.1 million in cap space.
The Eagles have a surplus of cornerbacks on the roster heading into training camp and would be happy to get anything in return for Bradberry rather than release him outright.
I’m not sure how thrilled Bradberry would be to reunite with his former defensive coordinator, Jonathan Gannon, but teams aren’t exactly kicking down the door for his services.
In two seasons with the Eagles, Bradberry has recorded 98 tackles, 30 passes defensed, and four interceptions while being voted second-team All-Pro in 2022.
