Eagles rookie WR Johnny Wilson makes NFL history

You don’t see many wide receivers like Eagles sixth-round pick Johnny Wilson.

In fact, there’s only been one other player like him, and he happened to play for the same franchise.

Wilson, who measures 6-foot-6 and 231 pounds, will become the second-tallest wide receiver in NFL history, behind only Hall of Fame WR Harold Carmichael, who was 6-foot-8.

After being drafted by Philadelphia, Wilson told reporters he models his game after Carmichael, using his size to attack balls at the catch point.

“My whole life I’ve always been the taller, taller guy, but I had a lot of dudes to try to model my game after and just through practice and repetition,” Wilson said at Eagles rookie minicamp Friday. “Harold Carmichael, I love seeing his highlights and his film play. Alshon Jeffery was a dog here, DeSean Jackson, his separation at the second level was great.

“Other dudes in the league, Davante Adams and Mike Evans are two I tried to model my game after for the longest time.”

Wilson’s height has led many to believe he could potentially transition to tight end, but the Eagles have no intention of changing his position.

“I play receiver,” Wilson said. “A lot of people have opinions on what I should be. I’m on this team. I play for the Eagles. There’s been no talk for me being a tight end.”

Over his two seasons at Florida State, Wilson recorded 84 receptions for 1,514 yards (18.0 YPC) and 10 TDs.

Johnny Wilson Scouting Report via Bleacher Report

Johnny Wilson is a skyscraper-sized wide receiver with surprising movement ability and impressive polish.

As a route-runner, Wilson has much more to him than his ball-winner frame suggests. He plays with surprisingly quick feet and smooth hips. Wilson is able to throttle down and burst out of his route breaks with relative ease for a player his size.

Wilson is a standard X receiver with one-of-a-kind size. His combination of length, relative mobility and advanced route-running ability could make him an immediate contributor. Wilson would fit best in an offense that emphasizes true dropback concepts and allows him to work the 8-to-20-yard range outside the numbers.
