Hang The Banners: The New York Mets are above .500 for the first time since May 2nd, infielder Jose Iglesias performs ‘hit single’ at Citi Field following last night’s win over the Astros
Remember the New York Mets? I know it’s hard to keep track with any team in the NL East right now given the fact that the Phillies sit atop of the standings with an eight game lead over second place Atlanta Braves, but we should check in on what the New York Mets have been up to over the last few weeks.
*Checks Notes*
The New York Mets are one game over the .500 mark at 40-39. They are 4.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves, who are in second place in the National League East standings. In first place? The Philadelphia Phillies who hold a 12.5 game lead over the Mets and an 8 game lead over the Braves.

In the NL Wild Card race, the Mets are one game out of the final spot, trailing the Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Also in the hunt with the Mets, are the San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Look I get it. The Mets trotted out the McDonalds Grimace mascot to throw the first pitch on June 12th and since then have won somewhere around 11 out of their last 13 games.

That’s fun. I guess.
Actually it’s pretty pathetic. Take last night for example. The Mets beat the Houston Astros 7-2, which put them above the .500 mark for the first time since May 2nd.
Mets infielder and aspiring music artist Jose Iglesias, who goes by the stage name, “Candelita,” recently released his first single, “OMG” and following last night’s game, he the field to celebrate by performing his song.

Random Note: It was Pride Night at Citi Field.
Congratulations Mets fans, hang the banners at Citi Field.
I mean this is laugh out loud embarrassing for a team to celebrate like this while sitting in third place in the division, not in the Wild Card, and just cracking the .500 mark on June 28th as the Major League Baseball season is about to enter the month of July.

The standings don’t lie and maybe the Mets should pump the brakes until they at the very least are holding on to the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League?
I mean seriously, Iglesias signed a minor league contract with he Mets back in December was just added to the Major League roster on May 31st. The 34-year old Iglesias has only taken 36 at-bats this season with the Mets. He has 14 hits, 6 RBI, a stolen bag and five runs scored over that span.
The New York Mets are a clown show. Maybe they’ll bring back Grimace to play the trumpet for the Edwin Diaz entrance? That turned out to be one hell of a rally cry for the Mets. Can lightning strike twice?
We’ll find out sometime next week. Diaz was suspended 10-games after he was using the “sticky icky” last Sunday against the Cubs.
Anyways, Cristopher Sanchez just pitched a 3-hit, complete game shutout last night at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies own the best record in baseball and the Mets are so far down in the standings, that you can’t even spot Frank The Tank or Grimace from above – and that’s saying something.
