Rich Paul; Tyrese Maxey’s agent claims the Sixers weren’t even going to draft him during a segment on the Pat McAfee Show
Aside from landing Joel Embiid in the 2014 NBA draft, there haven’t been many other draft picks that ended up working out for the Philadelphia 76ers outside of the No. 21 overall pick in the 2020 draft, Tyrese Maxey.
After falling to No. 21 (Shoutout Mike Muscala) Tyrese Maxey has consistently elevated his game and climbed the NBA ranks into stardom – highlighted by last season, when stormed into the national spotlight by taking home the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award.

T1he future is bright for Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia but according to his agent, Klutch Sports’ Rich Paul, the 76ers weren’t always completely sold on him.
Maxey’s agent appeared on the Pat McAfee show today and had a lot to say about his client’s early experience with the Sixers – so much that a tweet posted by McAfee account was deleted shortly after it was posted.
Rich Paul on Tyrese Maxey:
“Tyrese Maxey, first of all, they wanted to send him down to the G League. They weren’t even going to draft him. Then they were going to send him down to the G League, and then they decided to play him a little bit. He scored 40 points against Denver in the bubble when some guys were out. Today he’s a max player, but he’s never allowed himself to make it about him.”
You guys are right, my meaning during Covid , players mess up! Point being he scored 40 and didn’t play the next games. Still expectations has to be managed . The journey is long . Today he sits in a place on draft night none of the experts thought he would ! #PatMcAfee

Yikes. Why Rich Paul is bringing up old stories from Tyrese Maxey’s rookie season is weird to begin with but let’s entertain the tweet above for a minute…
- Rich Paul talking shit about the 76ers is a weird move given the fact that Maxey just signed an extension with the team.
- On top of that, during the 2020 COVID Draft, no one really knew how to properly judge talent coming out of college with the lack of games and tournament that season.
- The result was Maxey falling to pick 21 – meaning 20 other teams passed on him before he landed in Philadelphia.
- Are we not all on the same page that Doc Rivers’ refusal to play young players has always been an issue, regardless of what team he’s coaching?
- Does anyone actually care about what happened in 2020 during the Mickey Mouse NBA season and if Tyrese Maxey was sent to the G League his rookie season?
- Again, why is Rich Paul talking about this?
After the failed “dark years” of The Process, the Philadelphia 76ers spent draft pick after draft pick trying to build a team around Joel Embiid. They were all massive failures and not a single version of the 76ers were able to make it out of the second round of the playoffs.
While they haven’t been able to do it with Maxey, there’s obviously reason to believe that he is in fact, the perfect running mate for Embiid.
Mix in Paul George and a few other key role players and just like that, the 76ers have yet again, won over a fanbase that has been keeping them at arms length over the past few seasons.
There’s never any drama with Tyrese Maxey. He loves the city, works and plays hard, and has been rewarded with a shiny new contract.
Rich Paul on the other hand, already butchered Ben Simmons’ basketball career and even had reports out there during that saga saying that he wanted Tyrese Maxey out of Philly as well.

Now when things are actually getting better with the way fans view the 76ers, he’s running his mouth on the Pat McAfee Show?
Why? Does that make sense to anyone?
Of course it doesn’t. And that’s how his face ended up on a TLL Rat years ago and still remains in the archives today.
