Jeff Dowtin Jr. continues to show promise in Philadelphia

Jeff Dowtin Jr. was originally acquired by the 76ers on a two-way contract in the midst of the 2023-2024 season following a brief 2022-23 stint in Toronto under head coach Nick Nurse.

Dowtin’s contract was later converted into a standard NBA deal that lasted the remainder of the 2023-2024 season. In 12 games with the 76ers, Dowtin averaged 4.3 points per game, 2.3 assists per game, and 1.7 rebounds per game on just 11.8 minutes per night.

Throughout his tenure in Philadelphia, Dowtin flashed a solid ability to run the offense, especially in the pick-and-roll. So much so, that the 76ers invited him to join their Summer League team this season and he certainly didn’t disappoint.

Jeff Dowtin Jr. dominated the Summer League

With so much focus on sophomore wing Ricky Council IV and 16th overall pick Jared McCain, Jeff Dowtin Jr. was a bit of an afterthought. However, within a matter of just a few games in Salt Lake City, Dowtin proved how vital of a competent he was to the Summer 76ers.

Dowtin picked a part a plethora of premature Summer League team defenses with his versatile ability in the pick-and-roll. He thrived coming off of screens and drilling a quick floater or knocking down a pull-up jumper against drop coverage and showed excellent vision using the defensive attention he commanded to create open shots for weak-side shooters/cutters.

Dowtin averaged 17.1 points and 5.7 assists during Summer League, serving as the 76ers’ primary ball-handler and creator. His play should’ve earned him a spot on an NBA roster and the 76ers are fortunate to keep him around as a third-string point guard.

With Philadelphia’s two-way spots filled and just three remaining open roster slots, following the signing of Adem Bona, the 76ers are inching closer to finalizing their roster for the start of the 2024-2025 season.
