Tyler Phillips dominates, Phillies crush four home runs in 8-0 route of the Cleveland Guardians

The Philadelphia Phillies got back in the win column last night with a dominant 8-0 over the Cleveland Guardians at Citizens Bank Park.

At the plate, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos all hit homers to give their rookie pitcher Tyler Phillips plenty of run support – not like he needed it.

The South Jersey native and lifelong Phillies fan tossed a four-hit, complete game shutout to improve to 3-0 on the season. Phillips allowed four hits on 105 pitches (71 strikes) in nine scoreless innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Tyler Phillips became the first Phillies rookie to throw a shutout since Zach Eflin in July 2016. He’s the fourth rookie to do it since Mike Grace in 1996, joining Eflin, J.A. Happ (who threw two shutouts in 2009) and J.D. Durbin, who threw one in ‘07. [MLB]

Phillies Crush 3 Home Runs in the 4th

The Phillies took complete control of the game in the fourth inning – starting with Bryce Harper crushing a two-run home run to left field, giving his team an early 2-0 advantage.

Brandon Marsh followed shortly after with a two-run home run of his own to put the Phillies up 4-0 and not to be outdone, Kyle Schwarber then stepped up to the plate and crushed a three-run home run, scoring Nick Castellanos and newly-acquired Austin Hays

Nick Castellanos is hitting .304 with six home runs and 23 RBI over his last 30 games. Last night, Casty went 2-for-3 and crushed his 15th home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to right field.

The Cleveland Guardians are a very good baseball team, which made Tyler Phillips’ complete game shutout even more impressive. Phillips’ ninth inning was arguably his best as he notched three crucial outs including two strikeouts and a fly out to the new Phillies left fielder, Austin Hays to end the game and complete the shutout.

Up Next for the Phillies
