Three takeaways from the Eagles’ first unofficial depth chart

The Eagles have released their unofficial depth chart ahead of their first preseason game vs. Baltimore.

Here’s a look at how it currently stands. Keep in mind that the Eagles Communications Department, not the coaching staff, puts together the depth chart, so take it with a grain of salt.

Here are some of my takeaways at first glance:

CB2 By Committee?

The cornerback position has been one of the top storylines this summer. Veteran James Bradberry endured a terrible 2023 campaign, and the Eagles drafted two top corners in response.

When you factor in rising talent Kelee Ringo and a hungry Isaiah Rodgers coming off a gambling suspension, the CB position is in a much better spot than in previous years.

On the unofficial depth chart, Darius Slay is entrenched as the team’s CB1, with Ringo and Rodgers splitting the CB2 duties. Ringo shined for Philadelphia down the stretch last season as a rookie and is following up with a strong training camp.

Rodgers, who was acquired by the Eagles last offseason, looks as though he hasn’t lost a step despite being out of football for a year.

First-round CB Quinyon Micthell has been getting starting reps as a slot in camp and is currently listed as Slay’s backup.

Jeremiah Trotter Jr. Co-Starter

Devin White and Zack Baun are firmly in the lead to start at linebacker Week 1, but seeing Jeremiah Trotter Jr.’s name as a potential co-starter is encouraging.

The fifth-round rookie has been getting work with the first-team defense in training camp and hasn’t let the legacy of his father affect his journey.

“I’m just focused on getting better every single day,” Trotter said. “There’s always stuff I can improve on. They rotate me in a little bit with the ones, but I just want to focus on continuing to improve and gain their trust and do whatever I can to help the team and find my role.”

Trotter Jr. has thrived in the opportunities DC Vic Fangio has given him thus far, and it won’t be long before his impact is felt on Sundays. Considering Trotter Jr. has been around the organization since childhood, his development and football IQ shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

“Sometimes rookies will come into an unfamiliar environment. They get homesick, stuff like that, but I feel I haven’t had that,” Trotter said. “I have people who have seen me grow up, basically. I’ve been around the facility since a young age and coming back they greeted me and I saw some familiar faces.

“It’s basically like being home, so I can be comfortable with that and focus on football.”

James Bradberry Finding A Home At Safety?

The Eagles don’t appear to be any closer to moving James Bradberry, so he remains on the roster for now.

With a surplus of talent now at cornerback, Bradberry approached the coaching staff about a potential transition to safety — and it’s paying off so far.

Bradberry’s instincts and coverage skills are shining on the backend as the defense deals with injuries. Sydney Brown is working his way back from a torn ACL, Mekhi Gardner is nursing a hamstring injury and C.J. Gardner-Johnson has missed the last two practices with a shoulder issue.

First-team reps are opening up for Bradberry, and he could very well find himself in the safety rotation as the calendar creeps closer to September.

“James has got a good feel for football,” Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “Very knowledgeable. So that will help him in that transition.”
