Guerschon Yabusele

What Guerschon Yabusele brings to Philadelphia 76ers’ controversial power forward rotation?

The Philadelphia 76ers have officially inked power forward from Real Madrid/Team France Guerschon Yabusele to a 1-year NBA contract.

The 28-year-old French forward has agreed to a one-year deal with the 76ers with a $2.1 million minimum, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Yabusele will serve as a four-man alongside KJ Martin and Caleb Martin.

He averaged 14 points during the Olympics and scored 20 points in the Gold Medal game against Team USA, trailing only Victor Wembanyama for Team France.

Two of those 20 points came when Yabusele went viral across social media after he put LeBron James on a poster.

Despite the 76ers having three players listed at the power forward position, the 76ers weakest spot on the roster definitely needed another player with a high upside that can back up projected starter Caleb Martin – who many believe is better suited at the three position.

After the Guerschon Yabusele addition, Philadelphia only has one roster spot left, which will be left unfilled to preserve flexibility according to the team President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey.

What does Guerschon Yabusele bring to 76ers?

I could simply fill this portion of the article with Guerschon Yabusele’s unprecedented poster on LeBron James in the 2024 Olympics with that being all you needed to know. But, there’s a lot more to the forward’s versatile skill-set than just flashy dunks.

It goes without saying that Yabusele is ridiculously athletic, which shows on both ends of the ball. The French native is a sneaky back-door cutter, who will punish a helping defender with a quick cut and an emphatic dunk from the baseline, similar to Aaron Gordon.

Defensively, Yabusele’s athleticism helps him protect the rim as a energetic weak-side help defender as well as an effort to keep up with his man laterally and off the dribble in single coverage.

Yabusele’s physicality is another staple in his game, allowing him to be an effective post defender and in turn, bulldoze his way through defender and score in the low post/rim with ease.

The French forward operates on a revving motor that drives him to make big time plays on both ends of the ball as well as being an impactful presence for his teammates.

While his athleticism and physicality are the main components of his skill-set, Yabusele is a decent three-point shooter. His shooting numbers aren’t much to boast about, but the 76ers forward has proven capable of knocking spot-up threes from various spots on the floor.

Guerschon Yabusele’s role on the 76ers

As stated, Caleb Martin will more than likely be the team’s starting power forward, but that doesn’t mean Yabusele won’t carve out a consistent role in Philadelphia.

It seems that there will be a competition between Yabusele and KJ Martin for the back up four minutes that’ll likely be settled throughout training camp and preseason.

KJ Martin has the benefit of having a year under his belt with the 76ers along with potentially getting run to boost his trade value for when/if Philadelphia deals his balloon contract.

Yabusele does bring the size and physicality that Philadelphia has been lacking in the front-court. But, the overseas and NBA game are two different beasts, so it’s likely that he’ll have some growing pains early on.

76ers head coach Nick Nurse may alternate between Yabusele and Martin depending on the nature of the matchup, whether it’s best to go bigger or smaller.

At best case, the French forward could go as far as to even start next to Joel Embiid in a Jaden McDaniels type of role or be a consistent rotational piece. At worst, Yabusele comes in as an innings-eater on occasion and fades in and out of the rotation.
