Former Philadelphia 76ers draft pick Filip Petrusev extends contract with Olympiacos, will be loaned to another club

Former Philadelphia 76ers draft pick Filip Petrusev is set to extend his contract with Olympiacos and ultimately be loaned to another club – with Crvena Zvezda showing the most interest.

The Sixers took a chance on Filip Petrusev with the 50th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, hoping he could add some depth behind Joel Embiid. After making his name at Gonzaga and spending a couple of productive years in Europe, he seemed ready to make the jump to the NBA.

Instead of heading straight to the league, Petrusev chose to keep refining his game overseas, spending time in Turkey and Serbia before coming back to suit up for the Sixers

Unfortunately, his NBA debut didn’t last long. Petrusev signed a two-year, minimum-salary deal with the Sixers in the 2023 offseason. He had a partial guarantee of about $560K but found himself traded as a part of the James Harden deal just eight days into the season.

He appeared in just one game for Philly before being traded to the Clippers. From there, he was flipped to the Kings, where he appeared in just two games before being waived.

Filip Petrusev set to extend contract with Olympiacos

Now, Petrusev is heading back to familiar territory in Europe.

Olympiacos picked him up, but they’re set to loan him out, with Crvena Zvezda looking like the likely landing spot.

It’s a return to a team where he’s already had success, having helped Zvezda win the AdmiralBet Basketball League of Serbia and the Radivoj Korac Cup in 2022-23. Petrusev has made it clear that he’s excited about returning to Belgrade.

This move also comes in the wake of Olympiacos signing NBA vet Evan Fournier, which has triggered some roster adjustments. Petrusev, fresh off a stint with Serbia at the Paris Olympics, is headed back to familiar ground, where he’s already proven himself a winner.

It’s been quite the ride for Petrusev, bouncing between the NBA and Europe, but it seems like he’s set to make another impact overseas until another opportunity back in the NBA arises.
